This was one of those jobs that I had been putting off over winter, and definitely should have done a little earlier. My three large pots of rhubarb were happily growing for several years despite being in a terrible soil base that was almost solid clay. Additions of clay breaker over the past 6 months had not improved the situation, so it was time for a full re-pot.
Each pot was turned out and to ensure the root system wasn’t damaged trying to break away the hard clumps of soil/clay, it was time for the hose to do its job…….while it took some time, we ended up with three healthy clumps of rhubarb roots ready for replanting into fresh, well prepared soil mix. In the process I managed to damage quite a few of the stalks (oops) but there is plenty of fresh growth waiting to emerge.
Stay tuned for updates over the coming weeks for progress pics.
