As tubers start to wake from their winter slumber, the growing ‘eyes’ will start to swell and these are the points that the new shoots will grow from.
Our sprouting ‘Anne’s Delight’ tubers show why we usually plant tubers horizontally rather than vertically. Although this isn’t a necessity (the little sprouts will find their way to the top of the soil searching for light no matter at what angle they are planted), planting horizontally with the growing eyes facing upwards allows for quick and easy cuttings to be taken if you want to increase your growing stock and helps to grow happy, healthy stalks.
