Well it’s winter, which means our Dahlia tubers are all safely packed away awaiting replanting in spring. During this period we take the opportunity to clean up all the garden beds, rejuvenate the soil and work on getting some of our other plants ready for the spring growing period.
This year we have a new addition to our vege collection…..Asparagus. Whilst I love eating Asparagus, I have never grown it or had any idea what an Asparagus crown looked like, so needless to say I was quite surprised when I opened the parcel.
These were mail ordered from a reputable online seller and arrive looking and feeling very healthy. I will give the roots (but not the crowns) a good soak to rehydrate before potting them up in their final growing space. Once established, Asparagus prefer not to have their roots disturbed, and keep in mind if you look after your plants these can grow for up to 20 years! For this reason, I have chosen to grow my Asparagus in extra large pots, so that I can move them around over the years if needed without needing to dig them up.
Stay tuned for updates throughout the year as these babies start to grow!
