Well, it’s that time of year. The frosts have started, the dahlias have browned off and had a couple of extra weeks in the ground to get as much of their remaining energy as possible stored in their tubers.
To avoid the risk of water-logging (and hence rotted tubers) and the risk of freezing, we dig them up, check each tuber carefully for condition and get them tucked away in thick paper bags filled with wood shavings, then into the garage for winter.
We started today with the digging and inspection of our potted tubers….off to the garden beds next week.
